Guidelines to Reopen Sunday Mass at Holy Cross

Beginning with the First Sunday in Advent, November 29, 2020

Appendix G:
Guidelines to Reopen Sunday Mass at Holy Cross
During COVID-19 Pandemic

Given the level of community spread in the Durham Community, we are proceeding very cautiously to resume in-person Mass on November 29, 2020, with a starting capacity of 25 (subject to change) people.  The Liturgy team has reviewed Diocesan Guidelines and best practices to keep everyone safe.  Please be reminded that Bishop Zarama has communicated that “all of the faithful continue to be dispensed from their Sunday obligation.”  Any individuals with high risk underlying health conditions and compromised immune systems are strongly encouraged not to attend Mass in the Church but continue to enjoy live stream Mass from home.

Here are the guidelines installed to protect attendees:

  • To attend the 10 AM Mass at church, register online by 12 Noon on the Friday prior to the Mass you will attend.
  • Doors will be open at 9:30 a.m. to allow enough time to check in congregants;
    • Plan to arrive at the Church by 9:45 a.m. to check in at the Gathering Space.
  • Everyone must wear a face covering. Congregants will not be admitted without a mask.
  • Greeters/Ushers will prop doors open for entry and use an attendance list for congregants to gain entry to Mass.
  • Temperatures will be taken; entry will be denied to anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher. Congregants must stay home if sick.
  • Apply hand sanitizer upon entrance to church. Entry will be denied if hand sanitizer is refused.
  • Bathrooms will be closed, so plan accordingly. There will be no water fountains in operation and the Holy Water fountain will not be in use.
  • An Offertory station will be located at the entrance to the worship space. Offerings should be placed in the “drop-box” prior to the beginning of Mass.
  • Parishioners must sit in one of the numbered spaces in available lettered pews (an empty pew is kept between each one) reserved on both sides of the Sanctuary.
  • All worship aids, prayer books, and hymnals have been removed from the pews. Please bring a worship aid if required.
  • Communion will be offered in only one species, in hand only.  Refer to the markings on the floor for 6 feet physical distancing.  Communion will begin with the left side (facing the alter) of the church.  Once the left side has completed, then the right side of church will begin.
  • Following the end of Mass, please exit on the right side of the church to the parking lot and return to your vehicle. Those seated in Pews A thru K exit through the door nearest the altar.  The remaining parishioners will exit thru the rear side exit door.
  • No bulletins will be distributed.  Please read online.
  • Please do not congregate in the church after the service is over.
  • Attend service only if you are healthy and feel comfortable complying with these guidelines.
