Holy Cross Drive-in Sandwich Event Exceeds Goal

Nearly 500 sandwiches donated for Urban Ministries of Durham

“On Saturday, May 16, the Holy Cross faith community once again showed that we are a community of believers,” said Ava Thompson, coordinator of the Social Action ministry at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

We are motivated out of our love for God to give back to the community as an act of thanksgiving and as a result, 475 sandwiches were donated,” she said.

That was nearly quadruple the parish’s goal of 125 sandwiches for this sandwich drive. The sandwiches were requested by Urban Ministries of Durham, in lieu of casserole meals that the parish had contributed in the past. The casseroles were discontinued when COVID-19 restrictions cancelled sit-down hot meals for UMD clients.

Dolores Paylor (in car, photo above) was among those driving up to the Holy Cross portico to drop off their sandwich donations.
