It's suddenly September! That means lots of activities at Holy Cross.

Family Fun Day and the start of a Year of Spirituality: Living the Gospel at Holy Cross

On this Labor Day weekend, the parish office will be closed until Wednesday, September 7. That means there will be no morning Mass celebrated on Tuesday morning.

This is a time when many have one final summer-time celebration. [Remember that as a parish, we will be celebrating our Family Fun Day on Sunday, Sept. 18.]

Labor Day weekend is also a time to remember the dignity of each person and the sanctity of work itself, while also keeping in mind those who are struggling with unemployment or underemployment, and the impact that can have on family life.

In his 2016 Labor Day Statement posted on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops website, Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami writes about the harsh realities faced by "our sisters and brothers who face twin crises - deep trials in both the world of work and the state of the family." But he also reminds us that "the Good News is Still Good," citing Mt. 11:28-30: Jesus said "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." Let us keep in mind those who may not be seeing that as a reality in their own lives, and consider how we can ease their burden.

The many donations of school supplies given by Holy Cross parishioners in the past weeks, and the generosity of nearly 50 percent of our parishioners who have contributed to the Bishop's Annual Appeal, bringing us to just over 85% of goal, are making a difference in the lives of many. Yet there is still much work to be done. On this long weekend, it may be good to take some time to read and reflect on the full letter. It concludes with a quote from Psalms:

Fill us at daybreak with your kindness,
that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.
And may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours;
prosper the work of our hands for us!
Prosper the work of our hands!  (Psalm 90:14-17)
