Lent: An Opportunity to Grow Closer to Christ Jesus

A time for added prayer, study, action and fellowship at Holy Cross

Lent isn’t just about abstaining. It’s also about prayer, study and action – participating in spiritual practices and activities that strengthen our relationship with Christ – and responding to his call. Invite friends and family members to participate in Holy Cross Lenten activities this year.

We are now in the Lenten season, which continus through April 21.

... on our journey to Easter

“Lent began with Ash Wednesday on March 6, when we were signed with ashes, which symbolize death and remind us not only of our own death but also our desire to die to selfishness as a preparation for Easter and heaven. Use this opportunity to show the Lord your desire to repent and to die to self.” — Fr. Bart, our pastor.

Holy Cross will be welcoming Michael Poole and Quincy Purvis to the Catholic Faith at the Easter Vigil Mass. Please keep them in your prayers.

Holy Cross is hosting the Knights of Columbus Council 3390’s Lenten Fish Fry on Friday, April 5 (eat in and take out options). Menu: Fried catfish, French fries, homemade cole slaw and Mac & Cheese, Hush Puppies, Lemonade and Iced Tea, and assorted desserts. $10 per plate. Visa & Mastercard accepted. Abstain from meat and help our local Knights of Columbus to support our seminarians. See the schedule for Holy Infant and Immaculate Conception.

  • March 15 & April 12 | Holy Infant
  • April 5 | Holy Cross

Operation Rice Bowl | Following the lead of Pope Francis, CRS Rice Bowl invites Catholics across the country to take part in the second year of Share the Journey, a global campaign launched by the pope to raise awareness and inspire action on behalf of migrants and refugees worldwide.

Deposit loose change into your household’s CRS Rice Bowls. Didn’t receive a Rice Bowl? Any container will work. At the end of Lent, count your change and put a check in that amount, made out to Holy Cross with CRS Rice Bowl in the memo line, in the Sunday collection. (You can also do this through our online giving site. Click ‘give a new gift’ and select Operation Rice Bowl from the fund options.) The parish then will send one check to CRS Rice Bowl for the total of all our parishioners’ Rice Bowl donations.

Helping Families Moving Forward: April 1 and 2. Be part of helping families move from homelessness to stability and self-reliance. Families without a place to live, families in need. Holy Cross is one of the area churches that provides volunteers to help provide families with children a stable, safe and loving environment while they are in the temporary crisis of homelessness. Participating churches serve on a quarterly basis. Holy Cross is scheduled for April 1 an 2. Read more here and contact our volunteer coordinator, Elizabeth Deshaies for details.

Durham CROP Hunger Walk: April 7, 1:30 PM, leaving from Duke Chapel in Durham. Holy Cross has been one of the leading teams. Let's plan to meet and walk together, and continue the tradition of support for this global effort. Read details and register to walk with the Holy Cross Catholic Church team – or to support one of our walkers with a donation. Holy Cross coordinator is Debbie Hilliard. Crop Walk t-shirts will be on sale at Holy Cross in the coming weeks. Cost: $3.00.

The Church sees the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation as so important that she requires every Catholic to participate at least once a year. At Holy Cross, Fr. Bart hears confessions on Saturdays, 4:15-4:45 PM, and by appointment. Lenten Communal Reconciliation Services are available throughout our deanery; see the schedule below.

Has it been a while since your last confession? Click here to view or download a reflection and refresher for celebrating this sacrament.
