About Our Parish

Our foundation, mission and vision

Our Foundation

Holy Cross Catholic Church was founded by the Jesuits in 1939 to serve the African American Catholic Community of Durham, N.C., in collaboration with the Diocese of Raleigh. Jesuits priests served the parish until September 2014. The parish then was served by the Franciscan Friars Conventual from Our Lady of the Angels Province in Maryland, until January 31, 2021, when Holy Cross became a diocesan church. Deacon Phil Rzewnicki, OFS, serves as interim administrator until a new priest is assigned.

Following are the Franciscan Friars who served Holy Cross:

  • Fr. Daniel Pal, OFM Conv., June 2020-January 2021
  • Fr. Bart A. Karwacki, OFM Conv., August 2018-June 2020
  • Fr. Andrew Santamauro, OFM Conv., September 2014-July 2018

Mission Statement

We are historically African American, culturally diverse community that welcomes all people to membership and participation in our liturgies, ministries, parish life and leadership. We gather to worship our Lord Jesus Christ in joy and are committed to addressing the needs of the Durham community and the people of God through direct service and promotion of social justice. We proclaim the Gospel by our lives: evangelizing, educating our youth and practicing a spirituality that finds God in all things.

Vision Statement

Our vision is to be a Catholic community of faith, characterized by praise, reverence and service to God our Lord. We strive to be actively engaged in our mission, church and community in collaboration with others, enabling us to be "a fire that kindles other fires."
