Children's Faith Formation | 2020

2020 has shown us a lot but one factor remains consistent, and that is that God is in control!

Although our parish is phasing in re-opening, faith formation will begin and continue virtually until December. The 2020-21 faith formation year will begin October 11, with a drive-through celebration and kickoff planned for October 4. Cllck here to register.

Read the following brief overview of our 2020 Faith Formation plans, and watch for more information to come.

Faith Formation at Home

When we baptized our children, we took a vow to be the child's first teacher of our faith. So, how does faith formation at home look like?

The parish will provide resources for our K-8 students, with lessons to complete at home. We will continue to use the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies curriculum. Children will complete the lessons and a short assessment at the end of each session; results will be sent to Jeanetta Hopkins, director of faith formation at Holy Cross.

"We are working on an virtual/outdoor engagement component for the students with more details to come," she said. Here is a link to learn more about faith @home.

High School students will engage in virtual small group instruction with Mrs. Deyait Watson. They meet on the second and fourth Sundays at 11:30 AM from September to mid-May. The youth ministry combines faith formation, Youth Group, and Confirmation preparation along with service, outreach and fun. Follow their activities on Facebook at Holy Cross Catholic Youth.

Sacramental Preparation

Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist is usually done in the second grade. Confirmation preparation is for older youth, typically in high school, and includes a retreat.

  • Parents of children in faith formation meet monthly for prayer in the Sanctuary. Check the bulletin and calendar for times and dates.

Vacation Bible School

Holy Cross typically hosts a Vacation Bible School for youth from ages 3 to 10. Details will be posted to the parish website when available.

Get Involved!

Holy Cross is a family-oriented parish, and all are welcome to assist with various activities, from teaching faith formation to helping with Vacation Bible School and our annual Trick or Trunk event around Halloween. Contact Jeanetta Powell Hopkins, director of faith formation, to discuss current opportunities.

Adult Faith Formation and Spirituality

The parish supports ongoing faith formation, spiritual growth and fellowship for our adults - from age 18 on up, with many programs also being open to those beyond the parish. View the Spirituality tab on our website for details about Adult Spiritual Growth opportunities.

Young Adult Ministry

Holy Cross has a very engaged young adult community, for those from ages 18 to 45, who arrange for meetings and events. For more information or to register, contact the director of religious education or call the parish office and ask to speak to Jeanetta Hopkins.

Senior Striders

This is an ecumencial organization of active senior adults in the Durham area who meet regularly and plan excursions that frequently include a faith-based program. Contact the parish office for details.

Visit our Sacraments and Rites page for information about Reconciliation, Marriage Preparation, Infant Baptism, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and Landings, for those returning to the Catholic faith.

For marriage and infant baptism, contact the parish office to make arrangements.
